Hello world
Although I’ve read a lot of blogs during the past few years, it has taken me until now to actually start my own. Better late than never, I suppose. And out of all the blogs I’ve ever read, I never went back to look at anybody’s very first post. How do you start one of these things anyway? Is a simple “hello” sufficient or am i supposed to lay out some grand manifesto of what I hope to accomplish through blogging?
In short I plan to write mainly about linguistics and computers, though I’ll probably throw in the occasional “off-topic” post here and there as I feel like it. Of course I’m well aware that computational linguistics doesn’t exactly rank up there with politics, sports, and the weather as a topic of conversation. Many (if not most) people out there will probably find all of this mind-numbingly dull if not coma-inducing. That’s quite all right. With several billion websites online, nobody should feel compelled to read this one.
However, if you do choose to read my blog, I promise that I’ll try to keep it as interesting as possible. One of the goals I have in doing this blog is to practice writing for a larger, less specialized (i.e. less geeky) audience. If I can communicate what I’m doing in grad school in layman’s terms to people without a background in linguistics or computer science, then I will feel like I’ve succeeded in some small way.
Stay tuned for more info in the next few days. We have a lot of catching up to do.

I’ll be sure and crack the whip if you start getting ‘geeky’ on these articles. I’ll be looking forward to your upcoming posts.
