Back in the saddle again

For the benefit of anyone who doesn’t know, I just started a five-year Ph.D. program in linguistics at Ohio State University. Packing up the family and moving all the way from Phoenix to Columbus was not a decision that Karin and I took lightly. Admittedly we had become quite comfortable with our house, our jobs, and our new role as parents. At the same time, though, we knew there was something else out there that we needed to pursue. The whole transition process has been arduous and frustrating at times, but things have worked out remarkably well.

I start my fourth week of school tomorrow and I can honestly say that the first year of grad school is NOT easy. This is especially true for me as I have no formal background in my new field. I feel like every day I learn about fifty new things and become aware of another hundred or so that I really NEED to learn. The department is great though. The professors are wonderful, the other students are very supportive, and the program is seriously challenging. I definitely understand now why it’s one of the best in the country.

I’ll write more later this week about what exactly I’ve been doing. Right now I have to get back to the books…
