Google is smiling on my site

Back in an earlier post, I pointed out how this site is #1 on Google for the one-word query Alimadzi. This is obviously not very surprising, nor impressive at all.

However, I also mentioned my desire to be #1 on Google for Patrick Lee. Guess what? As of right now, I’m on the first page of results! This is quite impressive considering I have zero inbound links (that Google knows about anyway). For those unfamiliar with the strange and mystical world of search engine optimization, many search engines (including Google) place a fairly significant weight on links to your site. The more, the better.

So how did I con my way to #8 (as of this writing) with no inbound links? Well, Google also places a lot of importance on page titles and HTML headings (H1 – H6 tags). Back when I decided to see if I could push myself to #1 for my own name, the first thing I did was add Patrick Lee to the page title and the H1 tag at the top of the page. My guess is that it’s working. What do you think?

Out of curiosity, how long does it usually take for the Google spiders to do their dirty work?

It varies considerably, but rumor has it that Google does a major indexing once a month. When you’ve been indexed once, the spiders may come back every few days. They do on this site. You can check to see if you’ve been indexed by searching for “site: yoursitehere.com” (remember to change that to your own domain first).
