Urban Dictionary needs more cowbell
Have you ever wished there was a website that existed for the sole purpose of cataloging all of our weird slang? Well, guess what? You’re in luck. The Urban Dictionary does just that and is this week’s Website of the Week.
Despite the title of this post, the Urban Dictionary does in fact have more cowbell, a perfect example of the kind of pop culture inside jokes that make it a great website. For the culturally deprived, “more cowbell” is a phrase from a Saturday Night Live skit from 1999 with Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken about the recording of Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper”. Check out the complete transcript and the original video (warning: gorillamask.net is a bit risque). It’s absolutely hilarious. The popularity of the phrase even spawned a repeat performance of sorts when Will Ferrell came back to host SNL and played cowbell during a song by Queens of the Stone Age (see the video on gorillamask.net). A quick Google search for “more cowbell” uncovers all sorts of weird stuff including a band by that name, t-shirts, mugs, and a nicely-written article from the Washington Post.
Okay, so maybe naming the Urban Dictionary as a Website of the Week was just a pretense for talking about my favorite SNL skit of all time. What can I say? This world would be better off… with more cowbell!
