Smooth upgrade to Wordpress 2.0 (knock on wood)
I just upgraded from 1.5 to the newly-released WordPress 2.0 and everything seems to be working properly. For anyone wondering what I’m talking about, WordPress is the open source online publishing software that runs this humble blog. The upgrade took all of three minutes, so if you happened to visit the site during that brief window (highly unlikely given the low traffic), there’s your explanation for why it seemed to vanish and then come back.
Readers probably won’t notice any changes other than a slight speed boost. Most of the new bells and whistles are for ME – in the admin section of the site. Don’t worry. I won’t bore you with the details. For anybody who is truly interested, read this post on Asymptomatic. And if you want your very own WordPress blog, you can get a free one at WordPress.com (no ads or anything, just free).
Suffice it to say that I am very impressed with what the WordPress team has created. I thought I had done a pretty decent job in the past few years of keeping up with the relevant stuff (PHP, MySQL, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML, etc.), but the bar keeps getting raised. The pace of innovation on the Web right now is actually quite staggering and I predict that 2006 will be an important year in its development. As for MY web dev chops, I’m just hoping to cobble together enough spare time while in grad school to remain a step or two behind the vanguard. I’ve invested too much time and energy in my skill set to let it stagnate. Besides, all these new web dev techniques will come in very handy in the realm of computational linguistics. You can take that to the bank.
