Le T-Rex est mort, vive le T-Rex!
Today I pause to reflect on the passing of a project. Namely the original Mozilla suite. The T-Rex in the title refers to the old school “dino head” logo that the project used. Everyone knew this day would come and I’m really not sad at all, but I still want to mark the occasion.
For anyone who doesn’t know, the Mozilla suite was the open source basis for the Netscape browser until Mozilla was spun off as a non-profit a couple years ago. Recently the suite has given way to several very promising, but separate applications: Firefox, Thunderbird, and Nvu. Perhaps you’ve heard of them? With Mozilla’s time and attention invested elsewhere, the suite became a lower and lower priority. Late last year, a group of volunteers came forward with a plan to continue the project under its longtime codename: SeaMonkey. While they are receiving considerable support from Mozilla, it is technically a separate project.
The official announcement came last week, but I’m marking the occasion today in three ways:
- I finally uninstalled the Mozilla suite.
- I installed SeaMonkey for the first time.
- I bought one of the last Mozilla T-Rex shirts that will ever be made!
So I guess that’s that. Onward and upward! Stay tuned for version 2.0 of both Firefox and Thunderbird later this year. Go Mozilla!
