28 more reasons to love my local library
So I stop by the Worthington Library yesterday to drop off some books and DVDs. While dropping the DVDs in the return bin, I notice an Arabic language course on CDs that somebody else returned. My curiosity piqued, I go find the language learning section to see what they had. Admittedly the selection is rather paltry, but there’s a stack of Rosetta Stone flyers sitting on an empty area of the shelf.
For those who don’t read any magazines and haven’t seen the ads, Rosetta Stone is a very comprehensive and computer-based language immersion program. It’s also not cheap with most programs setting you back about $300. Supposedly it’s recommended by the State Department and a bunch of major corporations.
Expecting the flyer to be a sales pitch, I pick it up anyway and am shocked to discover that the library has bought all 28 languages courses and they’re all available on the web for library members… for FREE! Several people came running to investigate the loud thud as my jaw hit the floor.
Last night I went through the first Swahili lesson and I must say that I’m really impressed with the program. Even though we’re moving west in a month, my library membership is good for another two years. That’s enough time to learn 28 languages, right?
Sphere: Related ContentAnother update
It’s been a couple weeks now and all my good intentions haven’t caused me to write more. In my defense, we’ve been quite busy. Here’s the executive summary…
We made an attempt to sell our house here in Columbus on our own. We put a very professional looking FSBO sign in the yard (that’s “For Sale By Owner” for those who don’t know) and I created HouseOnStanton.com to showcase the place. We also placed a small color ad in the Sunday paper. After all that, we’ve gotten a few dozen hits on the website, one e-mail, two phone calls, and one showing. It was a long shot to begin with, but it’s clearly not cutting it considering our abbreviated timeframe.
So we’ve hired a couple of realtors to do the work for us. We were able to hire two because they’re married (good deal, huh?). They’re going to use our website along with the all-important MLS listing, a lockbox, a virtual tour, and many other bells and whistles. And their rates are actually very reasonable. This frees us up to go ahead and plan our move to Port Orchard for some time next month. We’re pricing our house fairly aggressively, so it should sell during the summer. At least we don’t have to wait around until it does. So stay tuned for more news of our moving plans as the day is now quite imminent.

Things have been quite hectic of late and the ol’ blog has been on the back burner. Yeah, the burner that never quite worked right and just made things kind of lukewarm. Well, I plan to get back into the writing habit very soon. In the meantime, here’s an update on what we’re doing.
First off, we are putting our house in Columbus on the market and hope to have it sold by August. At that time, we will be moving to Port Orchard, WA, where Karin starts a new job later that month. I’ll continue the telecommuting gig for Deer Valley School District in Phoenix. We’ll probably get an apartment for the first year or two and then buy a house after that. We plan to stay in that area for a long time. Settling down sounds really good to both of us after all our wanderings.
So that’s about it for now. I’ll keep you posted on our progress and I’ll try to write about other things too… in all my free time. HA!
